About Thalassemia
Thalassaemia is an inherited blood disorder that reduces the body’s ability to produce healthy haemoglobin. People living with thalassaemia require lifelong medical care, regular blood transfusions and proper treatment to lead healthy and productive lives.
Every year thousands of children are born with thalassaemia major-but with awareness, carrier screening and timely prevention, many of these cases can be avoided

Thalassaemia is a genetic (inherited) blood disorder that affects the production of haemoglobin–the protein inside red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body.
When haemodown production is reduced. red blood cells become weak and breakdown easily, causing severe anaemia
Unlike infectious diseases, thalassaemia does not spread from one person to another. It is passed from parents to children through genes.
